Death Notice

STEVENS, Nancy L. (Johnson) of North Andover and Newbury, New Hampshire, on Sunday, January 11, 2004; beloved wife of Robert D. Stevens, after a five year battle with cancer and loving mother of Samuel H. and his wife, Margaret M., Amelia F., Edmund B., and William T. and his wife, Sharon L. and four grandchildren.  Calling hours; 7 to 9 on Thursday, January 15 at the North Chapel of Christ Church, 25 Central Street, Andover.  A memorial Communion Service will be celebrated on Saturday, January 17 at Christ Church.  Burial will be private in Ridgewood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the Development Office, Lahey Clinic, 41 Mall Road, Burlington, MA  01805

Mother, Teacher, Choral Singer and Gardner

Nancy L. (Johnson) Stevens, 67, of North Andover and Newbury, N. H. died January 11, 2004 at home surrounded by her family after a five-year battle with cancer.
Born in Quincy, Mass. she grew up in Belmont, Mass. where she graduated from High School.  Right after graduation from of Cornell University, she was married and accompanied her husband overseas during two-years of teaching in South Vietnam, then they lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland.   She moved to East Lansing Michigan with her husband when he joined the faculty of Michigan State University, and from which she earned a Master’s degree in English   Her adventurous spirit led her to join her husband in East Pakistan with two children during a six-month consulting assignment.  Upon his retirement she moved with her husband to North Andover, Mass.
Mrs. Stevens taught English as a Second language, and freshman English in three colleges in Michigan.  Throughout life with a beautiful alto voice, she was a member of many choral groups, including the New England Classical Singers and the Andover Choral Society.  Skilled in Ikebana floral arrangements, she was a member of the North Andover Garden Club, maintained a large perennial bed, grew roses and orchids and took care of several historic garden beds at the Parson Barnard House for the North Andover Historical Society.  She enjoyed many summers with family on Lake Sunapee and had a lifelong love of single handed, small boat sailing.  From time to time she wore her shirt that said “I’d  rather be sailing.”
Members of her family include her husband of 45 years, Robert D. Stevens, her mother, Violet Johnson, her sisters, Doris Johnson and Barbara Gottling and her husband Philip F.; her daughter, Amelia F. Stevens; her sons: Samuel H. Stevens and his wife Margaret M.; Edmund B.; and William T. and his wife, Sharon L., four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling Hours 7 to 9 on Thursday, January 15 at the North Chapel of Christ Church, 25 Central Street, Andover.  A memorial Communion Service will be celebrated on Saturday, January 17 at Christ Church.  Burial will be private in Ridgewood Cemetery.  Arrangements were by Dewhirst & Conte of North Andover.
